Potty Bells for Dogs

Having a house trained puppy and adult dog is an essential skill. A puppy does not develop full bladder control until 4 – 5 months. After each nap, meal, drink or play, take your puppy to their designated area (indoors or outdoors) and stay there until they potty.

This is where the potty bells come in. Place the bells where you and your puppy can ring them as a sign to potty.

What are Potty Bells For Dogs?

If someone had asked me in 2017 “what are potty bells for dogs?” I would have had no idea. It’s amazing how your life changes by adding a puppy. It’s been 12 years since there was a puppy in the household and now we have two.

2017 updated 2019
Ideas on having to raise them have changed as well of all the new gadgets and accessories that are available. I was like an expectant mum (without the labour pains) reading on how to raise a healthy good behaving dog, new training styles and new accessories that are worth having.

Potty bells were one idea in the training and accessories that I liked the sound of. Bought some online waiting for the 2 new puppies.

How To Use Potty Bells For Your Puppy

In this video, Nudge is 4 months ringing the bells to go outside. He also likes to try and open the door himself. Another job/task that will be useful in the future.

I can say YES it works. In the last week, Nudge has rung the bells 3 times and when I have opened the door he went and used his toilet spot.

The potty bells have been on the back door for 2 years now.  Nudge had more training then Rita as he lives in the house. He would ring them to go out to play with Rita, not just for potty. Nudge used them to go outside up to the age of 1 year. At that stage, we left the door open for them to come and go as they pleased.

I had taken a couple of bells off and added to another ribbon for the front door. These bells alert us if they push thru the front door if it is not latched tightly.

If you have a small dog, live in a high-rise or no proper backyard, you can try litter pan training. You create a space for your pet to potty in an area of your house.

Until your dog has been fully potty trained keep him under strict supervision.

Use positive reinforcements while potty training your puppy or adult dog.

Remember, commitment, consistency and intelligent use of positive reinforcement will make you the owner of a perfect house trained dog.

Don’t expect miracles. You will only be disappointed.

  1. I love the potty bell method! It really helped train “me” to be mindful of potty cues. When it’s easy to be distracted by kids or making dinner, it was a wonderful way for our pup to get our attention so we could get her outside in time. 🙂

    1. You are so right, the bells train us to let them out. Nudge also learnt that ringing the bells, he would get attention or just want to play outside.
